Steadfast in Their Commitment to Hope

Steadfast in Their Commitment to Hope

Couple Makes Gift to Beloved College

Dr. Norman '53 and Marcia Veldman '56 Thompson are proud of their Hope College heritage. Seven generations of their family-above and below and on both sides-have attended Hope, including all four of their children.

The Thompsons have been faithful in giving their time, service and resources to the college throughout the years. Norm served as a member of the board of trustees from 1973 to 1988. In 2004, he was the recipient of a Distinguished Alumni Award, recognizing his successful career-spanning more than four decades-of training future surgeons at the University of Michigan.

Marcia and Norm have been supportive of programs and initiatives that are of importance to them and the college, including the annual Hope Fund, the funding of a teaching laboratory in the A. Paul Schaap Science Center and establishing an endowed scholarship.

Making Provisions for the Future

Several years ago, when in the process of re-evaluating their estate plan, Norm and Marcia made the decision to include Hope as a beneficiary of an IRA, which will fund the creation of a speaker series relative to the sciences.

"We believe in the institution," Norm says, "and want to help future generations of students."

Hope College is grateful for all the ways in which Norm and Marcia provide support to the college, including their planned giving intentions.
